The first of baby boomer generation will become senior citizens this year. Nutrition specialist from gives health tips to help American baby boomers live longer.

According to nutrition specialist Annie Hartshorn, understanding baby boomer aging needs is the key to live a long healthy life. A recent study shows that the majority of seniors over 55 and older have high blood pressure, obesity, and chronic diseases. The truth is it does not need to be that way. Remember, it is never too late to get healthy and stay healthy.

“Over seventy five percent of elderly Americans do not have proper nutrition which can lead to premature death. Everyone, especially elderly seniors, should have at least 5 serving of fruits and vegetables per day to keep optimum weight. It is never too late to get started on your five serving per day,” said Annie.

Fruits and vegetables with vivid colors like peppers, carrots, berries, berries, spinach and tomatoes provide essential fiber, minerals, and vitamins. Fruits and vegetables can decelerate the aging process through cell decay and damage.

“It is no doubt that our endurance, flexibility, and balance decrease as we age. Exercise can significantly help improving our quality of life by improving our muscle mass, endurance, and flexibility,” added Annie.

A recent study shows the relationship between our muscle mass and our age. “We lose 1-2% of muscle mass per year after age 50 and older. Muscle is important, because it keeps us strong. Pennsylvania’s Largest Medicaid Health Plan Helps Launch Philadelphia Text4baby Campaign

Philadelphia, Pa. (Vocus) June 9, 2010

Keystone Mercy Health Plan, the largest Medicaid managed care organization in Pennsylvania, has partnered with The Maternity Care Coalition and the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies (HMHB) Coalition, to launch the Philadelphia text4baby campaign. In supporting the new initiative, Keystone Mercy plans to educate and encourage the use of the service to its Wee Care prenatal program members. Text4baby is a free, mobile information service designed to promote maternal and child health by providing pregnant women and new moms with detailed health tips, via SMS text message, to assist them in caring for themselves and their children. The program, which was launched nationwide in February 2010, has nearly 35,000 enrollees, including 1,042 participants in Pennsylvania.

Women sign up for the free service by texting “BABY” (or “BEBE,” in Spanish) to 511411. Each woman receives three, SMS text messages every week, timed to their due date or baby’s age, up to the child’s first birthday. Messages include subject matter geared toward nutrition, immunizations, labor and delivery, car seat safety, breastfeeding and mental health.

Keystone Mercy Health Plan, through its support and collaboration with text4baby, plans to promote the initiative among its more than 5,000 Wee Care prenatal program participants. Similarly to the text4baby mission, Wee Care is a program devoted to educating pregnant women and new moms on health information and available services. The most notable health series, through the Wee Care program, is the community baby shower events, where Keystone Mercy Health Plan, goes into its members communities and provides important prenatal care information and screenings. Over the last three years, Keystone Mercy has also collected and donated newborn essentials to Wee Care members.

Commenting on text4baby, Dr. Eric Berman, chief medical officer, Pennsylvania Managed Care, Keystone Mercy Health Plan said, “We are very excited to assist in presenting this new, innovative program to our members and to expectant and new mothers throughout the City of Philadelphia. More than 11,000 babies were born to our members last year, and it is our job to ensure that we continue to provide the best in health services, to both mother and baby. This program helps us reaffirm our commitment by communicating health tips and information about the child’s development, between prenatal visits.”

Similar programs use SMS text messaging technology to provide information to diabetics, smokers and to people with weight-management issues. Under each category, SMS technology has improved the health of its participants. For example, 28 percent of smokers receiving SMS messages quit smoking, as compared to 13 percent of the control group (A. Rogers et. al., “Do u smoke after txt?,” Tobacco Control 2005).

Good health isn’t just about feeling good and adding on years to your life. If you consistently evaluate your health and keep up a beneficial lifestyle, you’ll save money at the doctor’s office, on prescription and over-the-counter drugs, and expensive tests and procedures. Besides long term, life threatening diseases like cancer and heart disease, frequent colds and infections can also put a strain on your wallet.

Eat Breakfast

Breakfast eaters are champions of good health. Research shows people who have a morning meal tend to take in more vitamins and minerals, and less fat and cholesterol. The result is often a leaner body, lower cholesterol count, and less chance of overeating.

Exercise Regularly

Research shows that seniors who exercise frequently are more likely to be in good health, maintain good health over time, and recover more quickly when necessary. If that’s not reason enough to maintain a regular exercise schedule, exercise has also been shown to bring higher levels of energy and help with stress relief, and weight bearing exercise can help women avoid osteoporosis by increasing bone density in many cases.

Unhealthy Snacking: Junk food is okay once in a while, but if you’re constantly noshing on greasy hamburgers and milkshakes, you will probably gain weight and may even increase your chances of getting diabetes. Unhealthy snackers may also have dental problems and acne issues.

You need to follow healthy and positive habits. Positive thinking is very essential in order to be healthy. You need to clear out your mind and fill it with positive thoughts. You will have to remove all the depressing and negative emotions and thoughts from your mind and replace it with healthy and positive thoughts. These positive thoughts can be extremely energizing and always lead to good things in life. You can get involved in practices such as meditation and yoga to get rid of the negativity and force yourself with positive thoughts.

Stop tanning: Tanning, especially in a tanning bed, is extremely harmful. CBS News reports that “women who visit tanning salons more than once a month are 55 percent more likely to develop malignant melanoma, and the risk more than doubles for women in their 20s who frequent tanning parlors.” If you’re desperate for some color, grab a bottle of fake tanner, which is better for your skin and more forgiving on your wallet.

Family mealtime is very important. Have mealtimes at regularly scheduled times whenever possible. Children respond well to predictable schedules and tend to snack less or overeat when meals are served regularly. Create a relaxed and unrushed atmosphere, have meals in the same location – the kitchen, dining room, or any room – where there are no distractions, such as a television. This will help the family to focus on the meal and on each other. Make eating a pleasant and fun experience where family can interact with each other, while learning to eat foods that are healthy for them.

Wear sunscreen: A bottle of sunscreen and a bottle of aloe vera gel may be about the same price, but the damage your skin receives from a sunburn far outweighs the aesthetics of a good tan. Decrease your chances of getting skin cancer and blisters by wearing sunscreen whenever you go out.
