hi kelly, diet really helped me through my own depression and anxiety problems so i know all about how important it is to eat properly for good mental health 🙂

first off a B vitamin complex is great for mental health, so ask at you pharmacy or health food shop for a good one & it should give you some help.

the key thing is to eat to keep your blood sugars stable, so things like never skipping a meal (especially breakfast!), not going for long periods without eating, snacking regularly (healthily of course lol) and avoiding sugar and refined carbs (things like white pasta, white bread, pizza, white rice, biscuits/cookies etc.). stable blood sugars are very very important to good mental health.

also avoid irritant foods like sugar, sodas, coffee, anything with caffeine in it (e.g. chocolate and tea), alcohol, junk foods and fast foods – these will all make you feel bad especially if you eat a lot of them.

oils are food for the brain, so eating things like nuts and seeds, eggs and fish are all really great for your mental health – the omega oils you find in these foods really help your body & mind to feel good. you can also take them in supplement form.

complex carbohydrates will also help to keep your blood sugars stable, so things like wholemeal bread/pasta/rice, bran type cereals and also pulses like beans & lentils will all keep you stable and feeling good.

a good breakfast is essential – no sugary cereals or too much coffee, go instead for something like a boiled egg with some wholemeal toast. this will set you up for the day 🙂

there is a great book that you can pick up to read a bit more on this topic, it’s written for people like you and me who may not know much about nutrition: Optimum Nutrition for the Mind by Patrick Holford. he even directly deals with depression and how to help yourself with diet.

i have also written a big post on all the things that helped me through my own problems, and although it’s geared mainly at people who suffer from anxiety the same principles will apply to low mood and depression as it’s all about good mental health: http://www.anxietyforum.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4087

if you start now then the chances are you’ll help yourself out of it before you begin to feel worse, it’s a good idea to nip it in the bud. i really hope you’re feeling ok again soon 🙂 xx

What are some healthy foods I can eat?

Question by Kathryn: What are some healthy foods I can eat?
I am a 13 year old girl, and I’m quite underweight. My bones are sticking out and such. I do NOT have an eating disorder, I actually eat quite a lot. I guess my metabolism is fast.

What are some healthy foods I can eat that will help me gain weight, or at least not make me loose weight?
I want to eat healthier, but I don’t want that to make my weight problem worse.

Can you list foods please? Not JUST fruits and vegetables. If you do list fruits and vegetables, which are best and why?

Thank you in advance!

Well one food that contributes to depression is sugar. I would totally cut out sugar and corn syrup. Try honey, stevia or agave syrup, all all natural sweetners that are good for you. Also try to get a good nights sleep. Our body makes mental changes, physical changes, emotional changes while we sleep. Also if you’re tired, your ability to metabolize goes down, so more food is turned into fat, especially sugar. Also getting vitamin D is essential to your mood, that means at least 5 minutes of natural light/sunlight a day. :-} I’m also combating my depression with diet an exercise.

Some recipes just don’t work

Some recipes just don’t work
Healthy Food Ideas

One of the recipes I’ve been working on for our new issue is just not cooperating. I’ve done eight different iterations of the basic idea, tweaking and changing, going back to the drawing board, reading, starting again.

This happens. Sometimes inspiration comes, but sometimes when I’m struggling with a recipe it’s a sign the basic idea is not good enough. It may be the recipe doesn’t quite fit into the ethos of An Honest Kitchen; the idea itself is not interesting enough; or I just can’t make it delicious enough, given the parameters of healthy, honest food.

The day after I made the decision to ditch this recipe, inspiration struck. I now have a version, which is quite different, but I’m really happy with.

What are some healthy foods I can take to work if I’m on a diet?

Question by Alice: What are some healthy foods I can take to work if I’m on a diet?
I’m tired of eating the same thing day after day and end up finding myself eating the junk they have at work. I’m hoping you guys can give me some inexpensive ideas for healthy foods/snacks to take to work. I have lost 34 pounds and don’t want working again to stop the weight loss. And, we don’t have a fridge, so everything goes into my cooler.

The easiest I’ve found is fruit and yogurt. Veggies if you like them. They’re all small, great snacks you can buy in bulk and cut up and bring what you need.
