Like other states, Wyoming’s Department of Homeland Security has a management plan in place but that plan doesn’t cover extreme national emergencies such as total government meltdowns.

Wyoming state representatives have voted to create a doomsday government task force in the event the state must self-sufficiently operate during a national economic or political collapse.

Passing on its first reading Friday, House Bill 85 would permit an investigation on issues like alternative currency, food distribution, a possible state military draft, and obtaining military aircraft.

The bill faces two more House votes before it goes to the Senate for approval.

‘To put your head in the sand and think that nothing bad’s going to happen, and that we have no obligation to the citizens of the state of Wyoming to at least have the discussion, is not healthy,’ Rep Lorraine Quarberg, a Republican of Thermopolis said according to the Casper Star Tribune.

The amendment sponsored by state Rep David Miller, R-Riverton, is said to be in precaution, notably at a time when the national debt exceeds trillion.

The house vote came the same day the Bipartisan Policy Center, a Washington DC-based think tank, released a report cautioning the national debt limit’s own doomsday to be closer than previously expected.

The BPC expects it to hit .5 trillion between late November and early January of next year.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner testified before the Senate Budget Committee last week saying the US will reach its debt limit ‘significantly’ after September 30 when the fiscal years ends, but also ‘before the end of the calendar year,’ according to a Politico report.

The BPC credits the skyrocketing figures to unexpectedly low corporate tax revenues and the extension of the payroll tax holiday.

‘I don’t think there’s anyone in this room today that would come up here and say that this country is in good shape, that the world is stable and in good shape, because that is clearly not the case,’ Rep Quarberg said Friday for the bill.

Not the first state to propose the brainstorming of alternative currencies in recent years, at least 11 others have proposed legislation for their own legal tender in the instance federal dollars become worthless.

‘I think we’re in the process of inflating a dollar bubble that could be very devastating,’ said North Carolina Representative Glen Bradley, R-Youngsville, early last year during his own legislative proposal according to the News Observer.

In addition to North Carolina, lawmakers in Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Utah and Washington have also proposed legislation in accepting currency of silver and or gold.

The proposal of the hard metals and not paper bills follows in accordance with the US Constitution, in Article 1, Section 10, reading ‘No state shall … coin money; emit bills of credit; make any thing but gold and silver coin a tender in payment of debts…’

None of the states’ proposed bills have thus far been successful.

Wyoming’s proposed task force would be made up, among others, of state lawmakers, Wyoming’s Department of Homeland Security director, the state’s attorney general and its National Guard’s adjutant general.

The proposed bill originally appropriated ,000 for the emergency task force but was cut in half earlier this week by the Joint Appropriations Committee.

Corrections Soldier second in competition

PHOENIX — A Camp Humphreys Soldier took second in the Army Corrrections Command Soldier of the Year competition.

Private First Class Christopher R. Brunelle was runner-up after competing in a variety of contests with other Soldiers Jan. 19-21.
Soldiers and NCOs from across the Army Corrections Command gathered in Phoenix for the competition.

The competitors were from Korea, Germany, Fort Leavenworth, Kan., Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., and GITMO.

They participated in six events: Warrior Tasks; Engagement Skills Trainer for weapons qualification and moving targets; an obstacle course; a written test; a modified Army Physical Fitness Test; and a board.

Brunelle scored especially well on the modified AFPT and the obstacle course. “That was the toughest obstacle course I’ve ever seen, and I consider myself in excellent shape but that course put a hurt on me,” Brunelle said. “I feel my performance on the board and the written test were also strong but there is always room for improvement and I need to keep on studying and working on my confidence when facing a board of senior noncommissioned officers.”

Despite being selected as the runner-up, Brunelle is still preparing himself for the chance that he could be called upon to represent ACC for the National Capital Region Soldier of the Year Board held in Washington, D.C., in March. Brunelle also plans to attend Soldier of the Month and Quarter boards.

“I feel that continuing to prepare myself and compete in boards is going to help me once it comes time for me to participate in promotion boards,” Brunelle said. “I’ve learned so much in the past week. It’s really opened my eyes to a higher level of competition. Each one of the battalions and facilities in Army Corrections Command sent their best Soldiers to compete, and having to go toe to toe with them was a whole new level of competition for me.”

Soldier Show brings the noise to Yongsan

YONGSAN GARRISON – The United States Army Soldier Show, a morale event by Soldiers for Soldiers, started its South Korea tour with a 90-minute stage show for the Yongsan Garrison Community, Nov. 12.

The show, which holds tours every year throughout the world, filled the bleachers and seats inside Collier Community Fitness Center with musical performances. The music was an eclectic mix of contemporary and modern, varying from R&B to country to pop to patriotic.

U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan’s Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, with the support of volunteers and the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program, set the stage for the show. Pfc. Timothy Rau, the Yongsan BOSS president, said that helping out with the Soldier Show was an enjoyable experience.

“It’s a bit of a blast,” Rau, who works as the NBC NCO with the 14th Military Police Detatchment, said. “We have a few characters wandering around here and there, but they are all good people.”

After the show ended, Paul Stuart, the deputy to the garrison commander, presented an award to the staff of the Installation Management Command who helped bring the event to Yongsan. Stuart then thanked each Soldier in the show, presenting each of them with a coin of appreciation from the Yongsan Community.

“It shows what our Soldiers can do,” Stuart said about the show. “It helps the Community by showing the Community the diversity and the breadth of the Army. Soldiers just don’t fight and train. They do a wide breadth of things such as sing and entertain.”

Cpl. Drake Delucca, a production assistant and performer for the Soldier Show, said that coming to Yongsan and experiencing a different culture, but seeing everyone entertained in the same way as back in the States was worth it.

“It’s the most incredible experience to go around and entertain Troops and their Families,” Deluca said. “There’s nothing like it. Just to uplift people and see the smile on their face. Sometimes, they come in not in the best mood, they may have had a bad day, but we can always lift them up.”

As the Soldiers and Families thanked the cast of the Soldier Show and filtered out of the building, another successful performance had come to an end. The show would then move south to give the other Army communities in the Republic of Korea a chance to experience the show for themselves.
