Healthy Living Academies Announces Creation of Wellspring Community Programs, Launches First After-School Weight Loss Program

Houston, TX (PRWEB) August 7, 2007

Healthy Living Academies, the leading organization of treatment programs for overweight and obese children, adolescents and young adults, has taken the fight against childhood obesity into local communities. Today it announced the creation of Wellspring Community Programs, an after-school weight loss program for children and teens that partners with local schools and communities across the nation.

“Education and community leaders recognize the growing issue of childhood obesity and want to do something about it,” commented Lev Kaye, Managing Director of Wellspring Community Programs. “By offering a proven immersion weight-loss program in an after-school environment, now these community leaders and local parents have a solution to help their kids.”

Based upon the highly effective residential weight-loss program of Healthy Living’s Academy of the Sierras boarding schools and Wellspring Camps, Wellspring Community Programs will reach thousands of students with this community weight loss program.

Wellspring’s comprehensive and intensive approach fosters a sustainable, healthy lifestyle in students by combining diet management skills and physical activity with cognitive behavioral therapy. By focusing on behavioral change and extensive family outreach rather than solely education, Wellspring Community Programs aim to be the most effective outpatient weight-loss program for teens and young adults.

Wellspring’s first after-school weight loss and fitness program is with The Woodlands, a community in north suburban Houston, Texas. Wellspring has the support of local medical and mental health professionals, as well as faith-based organizations in and around The Woodlands. By partnering with the Community Association of the Woodlands Department of Parks and Recreation, local adolescents will be given the opportunity to learn and adopt a new, healthy lifestyle.

“We recognize the physical and emotional toll being overweight has on the youth in our community,” said Linda K. Hughes, Recreational Superintendent for The Woodlands Department of Parks and Recreation. “By working with Wellspring Community Programs, we can offer our local kids a real solution to improve their diet, activity, and self-confidence.”

Healthy Living Academies is a division of Aspen Education Group, the nation’s leading provider of education programs for struggling or underachieving young people. Wellspring Community Programs is the community treatment alternative of Healthy Living Academies, the leading organization of treatment programs for pediatric and adolescent obesity. Other Healthy Living Academies programs include Academy of the Sierras California, Academy of the Sierras North Carolina, Wellspring New York, Wellspring Adventure Camp, Wellspring Adventure Camp California, Wellspring Texas, Wellspring Hawaii, Wellspring Family Camp in Michigan, and Wellspring UK. HookUp: Sexual Health Info Text Messaging Service for California Youth Launches

California Family Health Council, LLC

Oakland, California (PRWEB) April 26, 2009

ISIS, Inc., has partnered with the California Family Health Council (CFHC), and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), STD Control Branch, to launch a statewide text messaging program for youth. The service, called Hookup, provides young people with accurate and relevant sexual health information plus a geo-targeted search for free and low-cost STD testing and reproductive health clinics throughout the State.

“We are thrilled to expand ISIS’ SexINFO program — the first-ever text messaging service for youth — beyond San Francisco to reach larger numbers of California youth. Hookup is an excellent example of a low-cost way to use health IT and mobile technology to help youth access the services they need,” says Deb Levine, Executive Director of ISIS.

California is going to be the first state with a text-messaging program that connects high-risk teens and young adults to available sexual and reproductive health services. To use the service, youth text the word ‘hookup’ to the phone number 365247 and are signed up for weekly health tips. Each tip contains a prompt to text the word ‘clinic’ plus a zip code to get contact information for two local clinics.

All tips have been informed by California youth to assure the answers provided are relevant to the issues on the minds of youth today. Maryjane Puffer, Director, Clinical and Community Health Programs at CFHC, points out that Hookup 365247 will be coordinated with Teensource — CFHC’s educational website for teens and young adults aged 13-24 (www.teensource.org). The website offers in-depth information about how to make responsible sexual choices, to complement the SMS text messages and clinic referrals.

Healthy-Living Advocate Launches Web Site to Distribute Proactive Resources

Harrisburg, PA (PRWEB) December 2, 2009

Almost five years ago, Dennis Dyckman’s outlook on life was drastically altered for the better. After undergoing an extensive heart surgery, which implanted three stints into his heart, he gained a new perspective on life – one that allowed him to truly value his days on Earth.

In an effort to promote his newfound appreciation and respect for life and all its glory, he formulated a Web site, www.HealthyLivingRefresh.com, to extend his voice to a global audience. Here, shoppers can browse through a diverse assortment of health-promoting resources, health tools and accessories, which currently total to more than 400 different products. His collection of merchandise is intended to provide an all-inclusive approach to healthy living by distributing products such as exercise equipment, skincare products, vitamins, kitchen appliances (think juicers), air purifiers and more.

“There are three different ways harmful things can enter our bodies: ingestion, inhalation and absorption. The intended focus of my Web site is to provide products that cater to preventing the entry of negative effects of these pathogens,” Dyckman said.

Shoppers are encouraged to visit the Web site’s newly implemented blog to read well-researched and factual posts about a variety of health-related topics; nutrition, breast-cancer prevention and exercise are just a few of the subjects to be covered. This interactive tool, www.HealthyLivingRefreshBlog.com, will also be used to discuss the rapid benefits of juicing fruits verses eating them; he recommends a carrot, apple and celery combination for a tasty and healthy beverage.

“As a culture, we’ve fallen off course in regards to general nutrition and overall health. We’re an organic being and need to revert back to our roots by cutting out the overload of pharmaceuticals,” he said.

HealthyLivingRefresh.com is owned and operated by Dennis Dyckman, a healthy-living advocate.

FitBottomedGirls.com Launches Baby-Themed Site

“Raising a baby without going crazy” is the tagline of Fit Bottomed Girls’ newest site, Fit Bottomed Babies.

Kansas City, MO (PRWEB) July 13, 2010

Fit Bottomed Girls is excited to announce the launch of its first sister site, Fit Bottomed Babies. Much like the original website, the new site will feature fitness and health content, this time with a family flare.

“We recognize the challenges of getting healthy when it’s just you,” says Jenn Walters, Fit Bottomed Girls co-founder. “Add in a pregnancy, baby—or several babies—and balancing your health and wellness with that of your family gets a lot tougher. Hopefully by helping moms fit in fitness, exercise will become a way of life for the whole family.”

Well before pregnancy or babies entered the picture, Fit Bottomed Girls co-founders Jenn Walters and Erin Whitehead had the idea for launching a pregnancy and baby-themed site to cover health and wellness as fit bottomed girls transition into fit bottomed moms. Now, with Erin due with her first child in September, it was the perfect time to add this content.

“I knew pregnancy would make workouts a little more interesting, so I wanted to be able to share my experiences with our readers,” Erin says. “And because not everyone is at the baby stage of life, a new site seemed like the perfect way to cover wellness during pregnancy and after there’s a new addition to the family.”

Like the Fit Bottomed Girls website, Fit Bottomed Babies will feature multiple weekday posts with fresh content for women who want to be as healthy as they can be during pregnancy—and then once they have a new little tot in tow. The website offers fitness news, pregnancy and post-pregnancy workout DVD reviews, healthy eating recipes, tips on adjusting to the major life change and balancing yourself with your family], and of course, Erin’s’ first-hand experiences as she adjusts to pregnancy and motherhood.

Fit Bottomed Babies’ Mission

Fit Bottomed Babies’ goal is to help bring fun, fitness and balance to pregnancy, to post-delivery recovery and to the expanding family—and hopefully provide a little humor while doing it. It’s not about looking perfect or losing that baby weight in 30 days—it’s about making healthy choices for yourself and your family. While Fit Bottomed Girls is mostly fitness and health content, Fit Bottomed Babies will cover balancing your life, making time for yourself, finding healthy food the family will love, and finding activities you can all enjoy together. Just like Fit Bottomed Girls emphasizes the philosophy that it’s not about the number on the scale or size of your bottom, Fit Bottomed Babies does the same. With the slogan “Raising a baby without going crazy,” ] the Fit Bottomed Girls hope to help moms to keep their sanity!

About Fit Bottomed Girls

Launched in May 2008, Fit Bottomed Girls features weekday posts with fresh fitness content for real women and girls. The blog offers workout DVD reviews—including both new releases and Retro Reviews—fitness news, new product information, personal accounts of their exercise endeavors, easy and healthy recipes, workout music suggestions and playlists, and fitness humor. With the slogan of “Keeping a Lid on the Junk in the Trunk,” the Fit Bottomed Girls have fun incorporating workouts into their daily lives and hope to inspire other women to embrace an active lifestyle.

Healthy Living Academies Launches First Weight Loss Program in Texas

San Marcos, TX (PRWEB) April 2, 2007

Texas families struggling with overweight children will be able to access world-class treatment close to home starting this summer. Healthy Living Academies today announced the establishment of Wellspring Texas, the first summer weight loss camp in Texas. Healthy Living Academies is the leading organization of treatment programs for overweight and obese youth, with two boarding schools and seven summer camps. Each year, Healthy Living Academies programs help thousands of young people return to a healthy weight.

Due to changes in diet and activity patterns, millions of Texas families are struggling with overweight or obese children and teens. Texas rates for childhood obesity are among the country’s highest. In 2004, between 36-42% of school-age children in Texas were overweight or obese.

According to Healthy Living Academies clinical director Dr. Daniel S. Kirschenbaum, a professor at Northwestern University Medical School, there are several key factors that differentiate Healthy Living’s approach to weight loss from that of most weight loss camps. “Wellspring Camps focus not just on weight loss through diet and activity management, but also address the psychological and emotional issues that often prevent successful weight loss by sustaining problematic eating and inactivity. Through a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy, an introduction to healthy eating habits, and daily activities, campers at Wellspring Texas can expect to lose four to five pounds per week while enrolled, and continue to lose weight after returning home and over the next year.”

Wellspring Texas is located on the campus of San Marcos Baptist Academy. Located in San Marcos, San Marcos Baptist Academy was founded in 1907 and is regarded as one of the leading schools in the Southern United States. “We’re very excited to partner with the leading organization of weight loss programs for children to establish the first summer weight loss camp in Texas,” said Vic Schmidt, president of San Marcos Baptist Academy. “Healthy Living Academies has demonstrated unprecedented outcomes at its other programs, and we expect the same results at Wellspring Texas to benefit Texas children and their families.”

Wellspring Texas campers can expect a wide variety of exciting and rewarding activities this summer, including most team sports, swimming and personal training, aerobics and fitness activities. According to Wellspring Texas program director, Ondrej Jurik, campers will also take advantage of the many nearby natural attractions. “Wellspring Texas campers will enjoy tubing, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing and hiking in the Hill Country,” said Ondrej. “Campers will also receive Wellspring’s renowned nutrition and culinary training so they’ll be able to continue weight loss at home.”

Wellspring Texas is a program of Healthy Living Academies. To learn more about Wellspring Camps visit www.wellspringcamps.com.
