Central Park, south end – 004

Between roughly 86th Street and 90th Street, the inner-loop roadway runs parallel to one side of the Central Park reservoir; and just to the east of the roadway is a bridle path, where you’ll occasionally encounter New Yorkers determined to ride their horses … so, when walking along the bridle path, looking east (with Fifth Avenue and the Upper East Side in the background), you frequently see scenes like this one, as joggers go hurtling past…

These pictures were taken during a 3-hour Labor Day stroll through Central Park — starting on the west side of the park at 96th Street, and walking around the south end, and back up the east side to 72nd Street.

It was a warm, sunny day, and there were people everywhere — bicycling, skating, walking, picnicking, sunbathing, frisbee-throwing … and even getting married. It appears that everyone was enjoying themselves, on this final day of the summer season in New York City…

Upper East Side, Central Park – Jun 2008 – 067

These pictures were taken on two successive days when I had doctor appointments on the Upper East Side of NYC, and had the chance to walk along Fifth Avenue, and then through Central Park in order to return to my apartment on the Upper West Side, at Broadway & 96th.

I had now reached the west side of the inner roadway that circumnavigates Central Park, and was heading north toward the exit on 96th Street. I was at about 94 Street at this point — looking east, with the reservoir in the background.

Note: this photo was taken 3+ years ago, in the summer of 2008, when my editing and "post-processing" consisted of little more than simple cropping with Apple’s iPhoto program. On Dec 2, 2011 I imported the photo into Apple’s Aperture program, and used its facilities to adjust the hot-spots and cold-spots in the photo. What I was particularly trying to do was lessen the blackness and lack of detail in the black outfit worn by the woman in the left. I also wanted to "sharpen" the detail of the photo, since the combination of their running motion and my own camera-shake made the focus a little "soft." But it’s a JPEG image, so I couldn’t sharpen it at all; and I was only able to achieve a small amount of shadow-lessening in the black outfit. C’est la vie … I still think this is a slight improvement — and it’s also a good reminder of why I now shoot everything in RAW, and spend more time with the details of editing/post-processing… 🙂

I’ve strolled through Riverside Park on several previous occasions (click here to see a collection of approximately seven other Flickr albums of my Riverside Park photos) — but even though the sign at the 96th Street entrance is always the same, and the pathway is always the same, the people and the individual vignettes are always different.

Sometimes it’s simply a function of the weather: people dress differently, act differently, and are engaged in different activities in early spring than they do in summer or late fall. But much of it simply has to do with the incredible variety of people who take advantage of the opportunity to relax, read a book, jog, or picnic with their families.

So … this just happens to be what it looked like in Riverside Park on the last day of May, in 2009.

Central Park, mid-July 2008 – 47

Note: after this photo had been sitting on Flickr for about 4 months, I decided to "photoshop" it, to replace the gray, hazy sky in the background of the skyline of buildings, with a gradient-blue that fades into an off-white. Hopefully I didn’t go overboard with this…

After visiting the Apple store in mid-town Manhattan for an unsuccessful effort to buy a new iPhone 3g (click here for a description of what that was all about), I decided to walk through Central Park in order to get back to the Upper West Side. These pictures were taken at various points during that stroll…

I’m now at the the northern edge of the Sheep Meadow, heading west, but looking southwest at the buildings and skyscrapers near Columbus Circle. There’s not much to say about this picture; it speaks for itself, and I didn’t crop any of it out …

The guy in the green cap ran all the way across the field, from left to right; you’ll see him in the next picture too…

Central Park – Nov 2008 – 13

I was walking south along the bridle path that circumnavigates the reservoir in Central Park; and the view here is basically south, with the CitiCorp building and various other New York City skyscrapers in the background. The reservoir is enclosed by a fence (presumably to keep people from falling in, or jumping in to swim, or perhaps even attempting to fish), and there’s a jogging trail that runs along the fence; so scenes like this are pretty common.

I hadn’t taken the sun into account when I took this picture; during this season, it’s pretty far south, and for whatever reason, it left the runner in pretty dark shadow. I tweaked it a bit, and hopefully didn’t distort the background too badly. I also replaced the grayish-white hazy sky with a bluish gradient fill, using Adobe Photoshop Elements …

Having seen this Photoshopped color version of this photograph, my instructor in a March 2009 street photography class suggested that I convert it to black-and-white to accentuate the vertical shapes of the fence behind the runner. I did so here on Flickr, using Apple’s Aperture program, and with a yellow filter applied to the initial image.

I think the result is interesting, and I’ll try to keep an open mind for a while before deciding whether I like it better than the color version. However, if you have strong opinions one way or the other, I’d enjoy hearing it; leave me Flickr-mail or email me at ed at yourdon dot com

Upper East Side, Central Park – Jun 2008 – 114

These pictures were taken on two successive days when I had doctor appointments on the Upper East Side of NYC, and had the chance to walk along Fifth Avenue, and then through Central Park in order to return to my apartment on the Upper West Side, at Broadway & 96th

After my first stroll through the park, I returned a second day (because of a second doctor’s appointment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan). This time I entered the park at 97th Street instead of 84th Street — so I saw an entirely different set of scenes.

At this point, I had reached the western side of Central Park, once again on the inner roadway that circumnavigates the park, and was now turning south to find the 96th St. exit.

This was at about 98th Street, heading south. I was on the inner roadway, and was passed by an energetic woman jogging along with her child in a stroller…

Moving on, the photo was published in an Apr 19, 2010 blog titled "Our Bodies, Our Daughters.."

Note: after seeing how frequently this photo was being published, I decided to make some editing improvements — though it wasn’t easy, as I shot the original photo as a JPG image, and thus didn’t have access to all of the editing facilities that would have been available if I had taken it as a RAW image. But in any case, I focused primarily on reducing the extent of under-exposed shadow areas in the woman’s shorts, and the stroller. Hopefully the result is a little bit better than before…
