GEICO Employees Improve Health Dramatically with Low-Fat Vegetarian Diet

Hillary and Bruce, who followed a low-fat vegetarian diet in a GEICO worksite study, exemplify how office workers can lose weight, lower blood pressure, and reduce absenteeism if their employer provides healthy low-fat vegetarian meals in the company cafeteria. The findings are published in a new study published in July’s American Journal of Health Promotion. “GEICO’s workplace nutrition program helped employees lose weight and reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels,” says Susan Levin, MS, RD, an author of the new study. “If a company cafeteria offers low-fat vegetarian options every day, employees’ heath improves and they miss less work.” Ms. Levin is director of nutrition education for the nonprofit Washington Center for Clinical Research.

OraMedica International Takes a Bite Out of Gum Disease with Oral Health Booklets for Employees

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) January 19, 2007

Easy-to-read informative booklets that explain gum disease and the connections to an individual’s general health are now available for companies to offer employees as part of their health and wellness initiatives.

“Take a Holistic BITE Out of Gum Disease” includes tips to recognize signs of the disease, treatment options, and how consumers can help reduce risk factors for heart attacks, stroke, diabetes, pneumonia, and pre-term births — conditions that represent a large percentage of what companies spend on employee’s health care.

Created by two health-conscious dentists, the “goal was to produce entertaining yet strong, clear holistic dental health tips that could improve health and save on healthcare utilization and dental and medical expenditures,” says Dr. Andrea Brockman, President of OraMedica International, LLC.

OraMedica’s founders developed and designed the series of oral health tips booklets, based on their 25 years in dental practice treating medically compromised patients and teaching dental health and wellness to people with chronic health problems.

“We thoroughly evaluated each tip for overall appeal, comprehension, appropriateness and health supportiveness,” said Dr. Vincent DiLorenzo, CEO of OraMedica International, LLC.

A whitepaper, “Reining in Healthcare Costs: A Dental Advocacy Approach” provides employers with information on how dental booklets are an easy, effective, and economical way to contain healthcare costs and improve employee productivity. The paper can be downloaded at http://www.oramedica.com/whitepapers.html

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Three Reasons why Employees should undertake Health and Safety Programs

OSHA 10 hour training courses offer Health and Safety Programs. There has been a substantial rise in the number of accidents and injuries at work places. This is what makes it extremely important to have a safety plan in place. Employees should take the liberty to acknowledge themselves with the health and safety rules as they are laid down by OSHA. The above mentioned courses teach all that is required to know the ways of creating a safe work environment.

There are many reasons why such safety programs should be undertaken. However, listed below are the top three reasons for the same.

1.Reduce the chances of injuries and deaths of employees: This is the most important reason of conducting an occupational health and safety program. Any one of the OSHA 10 hour training courses can be adopted to educate all the workers on workplace related hazards. By undertaking such programs, employers can protect themselves and their employees from various injuries, illnesses and deaths. There are many types of work place hazards. Some of the most common amongst these are slippery floors, getting hurt due to sharp objects and falling or lifting up of heavy objects. Work place hazards may sometimes also include medical and fire emergencies. One thing should always be kept in mind. If the preparation is properly done, the outcome would, undoubtedly, be better.

2.Avoid being fined and penalized by OSHA: This is also one of the important reasons to take up these safety training programs. Employers can learn how to avoid OSHA fines by knowing just some of the basic ground rules. This will help them know how to take the necessary precautions. OSHA does not propose any penalty if the employer is cited for something that has a low probability of causing a possible injury or illness. The violation would, in any case, have to be corrected. However, if the cited violation has a greater probability of resulting into an injury or illness, a base fine of ,000 is used. Also, appropriate adjustment factors are applied to the penalty. In the extreme cases of serious violations, penalties can be anything between the range of ,500 to ,000. Such violations have the probability of causing death too. OSHA 10 hour training courses teach employers how to avoid such heavy penalties by enforcing the correct safety plan.

3.Management of a health and safety plan: OSHA has laid down innumerable rules, procedures and regulations for the safety and well being of employees. It gets very difficult to understand and remember all these rules. By undertaking Health and Safety programs, employers can design their own safety plan that includes all the basic measures and precautions. If you have your own company, it is a win-win situation for all; the employer, the employees and the company.
