Do You Believe Happy Meals Should Be Healthy For Kids?

Question by PS3 Slim: Do You Believe Happy Meals Should Be Healthy For Kids?
If you were a kid in America during the last 30 years, you probably have very happy memories of tearing into a McDonald’s Happy Meal, not only for the toy inside but for the burger, soda and fries.

Starting next month, San Francisco children will have a different experience.

San Francisco on Tuesday became the first major U.S. city to pass a law cracking down on giving kids free toys with unhealthy restaurant meals, Reuters reported.

The law, like an ordinance passed earlier this year in Santa Clara County, will require that restaurant kiddie meals meet certain nutritional standards before they can be sold with toys. Toys may be given away with kids’ meals that have less than 600 calories, contain fruits and vegetables, and include beverages without excessive fat or sugar.

Other than your 8-year-old, guess who else has a problem with this law?

“We are extremely disappointed with today’s decision. It’s not what our customers want, nor is it something they asked for,” McDonald’s spokeswoman Danya Proud said in a statement. “Getting a toy with a kid’s meal is just one part of a fun, family experience at McDonald’s.”

But others say the new law will make children healthier (and thereby happier).

“Our children are sick. Rates of obesity in San Francisco are disturbingly high, especially among children of color,” San Francisco Supervisor Eric Mar, who sponsored the measure, told the AP.

“This is a challenge to the restaurant industry to think about children’s health first and join the wide range of local restaurants that have already made this commitment,” Mar said.

We think a healthier version of a Happy Meal that contains a fruit or veggie instead of soda might be the best happy medium. And after a while, kids won’t know what they’re missing.

So what do you think?

They already offer healthy choices in happy meals, it is up to the parents and children to use them. It is good to offer apples as a side dish, and milk as a drink. But taking away fries completely is wrong, when i was a kid, the only time i ever got fries was with the meal and the meal itself was only as a treat. It was special to get a happy meal, most of the time we only got $ 1 burgers because they were cheaper. I am 17 now, and I still have some of my happy meal toys. It didn’t make me fat, or unhealthy to have the meal every once in a while. Ultimately, it is up to the parents to feed their kids the right foods most of the time, and still have some good unhealthier foods in moderation.
